Answer:

This was done on a 92 SLC but I'm pretty sure all VW's use the same type of rear caliper.

Recently I change all the rotors on my SLC to cross drilled and took that opportuity to paint calipers and change to EBC green stuff pads. In the process of doing this I enccountered what may seem obvious to some but had me pissed for about an hour, so here is a little explaination for those of you who are stumped as well. The rear calipers DO NOT compress in they "spin" in (clockwise rotation). The Bently manual dosen't say this but after figureing it out I can see how they imply it. Anyway after much frustration I figured they must be "spin in" instead of compression, called my local vw dealer confirmed this and inquired about the proper tool for the job. The proper tool sells for $100.00 from your local dealer and if you ask me not quite worth it for the amount of pad changeing your bound to do. Next step was to ask the guys in service, they said $20 bucks to do it, which still was to much if you ask me (being the rotors were already off the car). So I decided to take matters into my own hands and build a simple but effective tool for the job (I guess it couldn't hurt to ask your local service shop they may do it for free). The materials needed are as follows:

- 1 10" peice of 1/8" x 1" flat stock steel

- 2 1" 1/4 20 bolts

- 6 1/4 20 washers

- 1 1/4 20 tap

- 1 16/64 drill bit

Take the flat stock and measure in 1/2" make your first mark. From that mark measure 1.5" and make your second mark. NOTE these marks are OUTSIDE measurements, so another words make sure you drill on the inside of your mark so the actual measurement from edge of whole to edge of whole is 1.5". Drill your holes on the inside of your lines one on each side. Take your tap and thread your holes. Take your bolt and 3 washers thread into first hole untill tight. Repeat for second whole and there you have it 1 rear cailper tool.

To use the tool it is easyist to have 1) 2 people and 2)have the calipers off the car. Have 1 person hold the caliper so the piston faces up, take the tool and insert the 2 tabs you made into the 2 notches in the piston. Useing your thumb press down on your tool and turn 180 clockwise. Repeat untill piston has seated in flush with the rubber boot. There you have it feel free to email if you have any questions!
