Answer:

As is often the case with the venerable C, the sunroof invariably conks out. Well mine was gone before I bought it three years ago. I was content to just pop it up for ventilation. I recently scored a glass roof assembly from a 95' Jetta and proceeded to install it in my 90' C. It fit perfectly without any mod. I noticed though that the Jetta's track frame is a little longer that the C's. This did not, however, affect anything as it was a direct fit.

I decied to retain the sliding screen. This proved to be a problem though. The roof jammed when when I tried to open it with the screen fully opened and it also made a terrible popping noise everytime I went to open it. I removed the assembly and returned to the salvage yard and replaced it with one from a 97' Jetta. The assembly was the exact same. I decided to dispense with screen before installing the assembly. The roof works perfectly and I have a great-and besides,a screen less roof provides a great view of the sky from the tight confines of

the car. Obviously, if you do this kind of a swap you'd want to test the operation of the assembly before covering it up!

One little problem though, there is a slight gap

between the lid and the opening. It rained heavily a few days later and the roof did not leak! I lucked out, but I plan to reseal the lid with a thicker seal. I'd also recommend cleaning out the four drain holes while the headliner is off-Which I forgot to do.
