Installing a G60 Starter

By Mike Ferrand

The starter for my Corrado was rebuilt from the original starter housing, so compatibility was not an issue. The problem occurs when the starter is removed from the vehicle. The engine drops approximately 1/4 of an inch due to the fact that the starter nuts are parts of the front engine mount system and are attached to a hinge assembly. To reinstall the starter you must:

VW Corrado G60 manufactured between 1/90 and 6/90

1. Set the starter in position without the bolts in place.
2. Position a piston jack under the engine (not on the oil pan) near the transmission and raise the engine until the nut hinge assembly aline with the starboard bolt shaft holes (please forgive me if I'm not using the proper nomenclature). Insert the bolts and secure the starter.
3. Remove the piston jack and wire the starter.

As far as the wiring issues are concerned, after the starter install problems was resolved, I couldn't remember if the black and red wire attached to the horizontal prong or the vertical prong. It was the horizontal prong.
