G60 Radiator fan replacement

Diagnosis:

Radiator fan motor squeeks, rattles, or groan when running; feels gritty when turned by hand. According to Ron Johnsen of Denon, "they all seem to wear out around 100k miles". I had 102k miles on 1990 G60.

It's a good idea to replace them, because it will probably die when you need it most. A dead fan may lead to overheating and a dead battery.

The Part:

The original part no is: 191 959 455 AF made by AEG The replacement part I bought was: 191 959 455 AR made by Bosch and came with the fan. Construction of the motor is similar. I have not taken the old motor appart as yet, and it does not look promising to get any spare parts for it. Normal discounted street price for the part is 190US$, dealer will charge a lot more. I bought mine on sale from Denon for 130US$.

Note that unlike the VR6 engines, the G60s have only one fan.

Procedure:

Difficulty Grade:Annoying but easy if you follow the trick.
Time: ~ 1 hour

Take the top intercooler tube out, all the way down to the intercooler. You may have to loosen or remove the brake dukt to get enough leverage to remove the lower half of the tube. Stuff a rag in the open supercharger and intercooler ends.

Take the plastic flap off that sits over the radiator top.

Disconnect the fan, by first removing the metal clip and then the socket.

The fan motor bracket is attached to the fan shroud with 3 nuts. The top and driver's side nuts are easy to remove with a 10 mm deep socket wrench.

The lower passenger side nut is a MAJOR pain. I was able to remove it with the deep socket wrench, a 3/8 universal joint and several extension bars. Aim the extensions right over the starter motor and turn. It will seem like a steep angle, but it actually worked.

Once it's loose wiggle the fan assembly out and replace the motor.

While you have eveything out, you may want to:

  • Lubricate your shift levers with some molyslip grease.
  • Check the fan shroud mounting bolts. I was missing two!
  • Check the front motor mount.
  • Check the intercooler tubes for holes
  • Inspect supercharger for oil leaks

After that, reinstall all. Use loctite on the bolts. Dont forget the rags, and dont forget to reconnect the fan. Check running of the fan by switching to A/C.
