I discovered an adhesive sealant that was originally used to fix sneakers(that's right, get a few more miles out of them!) It is a extremely tough plastic called polyurethane. The trade name is "GOOP". Most hardware stores carry a few different formulae; get the auto GOOP!. It makes rtv silicone look like silly putty.
Get under the car and thoroughly clean all the dirt and grease from the old damper base and the damper. I sprayed carb cleaner on both surfaces. Let dry a few minutes and GOB the Goop on inside and outside. Wire into position and let it dry thoroughly. If you did a decent job, it should last over a year. Saves the cost of an axle!
