G60, 2RS,Turmat info

Supercharger info

hello corrado joes
i'll have a ton of 2rs and Turmat info for you all up on a page in about a month (soon as my cadeaver lab is over)

basically the 2rs is a modified g-60 unit good fro ~15 more hp and the turmat is an entirely different blower the thing is larger than the g-60 and is made by turmat( a co. in europe, very big).

TEC does some internal mods to the turmat gives you the bracket to mount it and the rest is bolt on...

my friend Rene Maier, works at TEC and will be sending me a ton of info so look for it soon.

Q & A's
Q. If those chargers have the same casing (both RS and Turmat) why can't we trade in our old chargers for a few $$ for them to build a new unit out of? Or is it just fitment and dimentions that are similar to the G60.
A. Yes, that is an option offered by TEC. ND will be starting the rebuilding/upgrading service in about 6 months, Tim told me. If your charger is in good shape, it costs around $1000 for the upgrade to RS specs.... I'm planning on about $1500- by the time shipping and taxes jump in.

Q. Can we not take our stock G60, and port out some air routes to make it flow more air?
A. Yes, Francis at Motortechnik has been making our G60s into G70s for quite some time... TEC also lets you do this, you can choose which upgrades you want in stages if you don't want to complete RS setup.

Q. If I need to get the new fuel stuff (what is it? injectors only, or pump as well, what else), and is only TEC making it? I guess we have to get a chip too, right? What does the work involve, is it basic bolt off, bolt on, change injectors and chip and off you go? Or do we have to take it to a nuner and pay another $1000 to get it installed? Are the pipes all the same
A. TEC so far is the only one taking G60 cars to those extremes that I've heard of, but you never know. The new fuel setup includes 60lb injectors (instead of our 44lb ones) , FPR, pump, pressure sensor, and remapped chip. I believe the chip is the most essential part of the setup, since it has to account for the increased volume of flow not just manifold pressure. Tuning would have to be done as well, but any competent performance mechanic should be able to handle it.

Q. Any upgrades to the intercooler?
A. Nope, not required, although if you do go through the hassle of installing a front mount cooler it is supposedly worth 20-30 hp more. The stock one does just fine, as far as pressure tolerances and flow go. I'd like to upgrade mine just for the hell of it, there are a lot of similar ICs out there that are just big enough to maybe be worth it.

David brought up a great question which was: What is the difference between a TEC RS charger and a TEC Turmat charger?

The RS charger is a basic modification of a G60 G-lader. It features the same design in compressors, just beefier. A G60 is so named for its 60mm air passageways... an RS has 83.5mm airways. ( I think RS sounds much better than "G83.5" , probably why they named it so) There used to be a TEC G70 charger, same idea with the ported unit. The 83.5mm airways allows for 91% more volume of airflow over the G60. As we all know, it's not pressure (boost is relative to volume) that makes power but volumetric efficiency (measured in CFM) and the RS has almost twice the CFM of a G60. Anyway, an RS has a twin excentric-shaft v-belt drive instead of the single belt a stock G60 has. This serves 2 purposes, to lessen the amount of stress on each belt AND in the case one breaks, so your charger does not explode (as ours tend to do when that belt lets go). The remaining belt is for redundancy, a fall-back-on safety innovation to enhance the life of the charger. The RS also has upgraded bearings and seals to keep up with the additional flow.

You would have to upgrade your fuel system completely to a TEC system, but without changing your bottom end you can make 300+ wheel hp out of an RS system. IF you leave your fuel system as stock + 944 FPR, you can make a max of 289 wheel hp out of an RS system (that's where our stock injectors max out, flow-wise). An RS charger from TEC costs $2800 US.

Now on to the Turmat. It's full name is the Viet Turbine Automat, turmat for short. It has the outside casing of a G60, but the internals are all different. It features a gear driven turbo impeller blade, like a Vortech supercharger. It's gear system allows the impellor to turn at up to 108,000 rpm (the G60 turns at a max of 13,000 rpm and the RS turns at a max of 20,000 rpm). It can make up to 30psi boost on a 2.2L motor, which is a LOT of volume. TEC hasn't published power reports of it, other than a base reading of 320 wheel hp with it running 20 psi . The quote I got for a Turmat was around $5000 just for the charger .. chip and all fuel system stuff is extra on top of that. TEC recommends the RS over the Turmat for most drivers mainly because of the streetability and it costs a lot less for similar hp gains. (also I bet they make more profit off the RS, it's not as hard for them to build) anyway, there you go for those who were wondering. I'll be taking the RS route in June.
