[VR6] early 92 Tech: Cap and Rotor replacement tips

This information isn't in the Bentley (no surprise there) so I wanted to share it with all early 92 Corrado owners for future reference . It appears that Bosch decided to make two different rotors for our cars, one with a set bolt, one with out. Both are very expensive $30 + , so be sure and measure the resistance on the rotor with a VOM before deciding to just replace it for the hell of it. The distributor cap is the same for both. The early rotor is orange and has a small set bolt. A 5mm socket fits this well. Even after I removed this bolt the rotor wouldn't come off , Presumably because it was glued on ( which the later ones are). Just finding a pair of channel locks large enough was a challenge, but even then the damn thing wouldn't come off. The rotor was also completely destroyed so I was 100% committed to replacing it at this point.

Here's what I did, granted it may have been a fluke this is what it took to remove it. I took my dremel with a little cutting wheel and cut the head of the rotor completely off exposing both the drive shaft and the metal sleeve of the rotor. then covering the distributor itself with a grease rag sprayed a shot of WD40 on the drive shaft and collar of the rotor, let it soaked and whoa la it came off. Ironically enough there were no signs of glue. IMO the WD40 spray on the parts was the only way it was going to come off, so getting the rotor destroyed enough to spray the drive shaft is necessary . This info could also roll over to the later versions that are glued on as the same procedure may be necessary.
