VR6 Gasket Replacement Info

Some Info from: Josh (jrjones@ptd.net)

VR6 Engines seem to be quite weak when it comes head gaskets. They tend to leak as early as 30,000 km. Although VW does not replace it free if you are over the warrany period, they have a replacement gasket that is stronger. The stronger gaskets however have smaller openings for the coolant, hence this makes the engine run hotter. Some have cut this gasket to make the holes as big as the holes in the block to allow maximum coolant flow. I have no reports of the longetivity of this modification.

Below is a summary of what parts are needed to do a head gasket replacement job. The prices are in US currency.

More detail from VR6 owners with more experience is welcome here.
