VR6 Engine Fires

by Rick Floyd

Q: Does the Corrado have any known electrical system problems?

A: There are two known wiring problems:

  1. VR6 Corrados manufactured between August, 1991 and November, 1992 were subject to a recall (campaign number 93V102000) to correct the routing of wiring harnesses. Incorrectly routed harnesses could wear and short during normal operation, causing the engine to stall or the radiator fan to stop operating.
  2. A few 1993 Corrado SLCs have experienced a short in a power distribution module for the cooling system, leading to the meltdown of multiple wiring harnesses and potentially resulting in an engine compartment fire. VW is covering the repair costs (which can run US$4000-$5000) in some cases. You'll have an easier time of it if you contact VW before repairs are attempted. If you have seen this failure, please contact me (Rick Floyd; rick@cs.duke.edu) for details.
