Brake Noise Solution

From: Geoff Milne (milneg@BrandonSD.MB.CA)

Description

Even though most of the noise was heard in cold conditions sometimes the problem was heard in the summer.

I spoke to many a person at Volkswagon Canada and they were of no help at all. They even went as far as to say the car out performs in all areas so why would I be concerned about an annoying noise. They said there was nothing they were prepared to do about my problem.

I am to technically versed but I can describe the problem. When the brakes are applied (especially in cold conditions) there was a problem with the calipers releasing. This problem would result in a awful rubbing noise coming from the brake area. The noise could be heard when braking, turning corners and accelerating from a stop.

It has been described to VW Canada as an "extreme brake groan" it it is caused by the caliper carrier not releasing 100% from the brake disc. I describe it as an "annoying noise" that causes me many headaches regarding my automobile.

Solution

Through the persistance of my dealer, European Auto in Brandon MB, They tried everything. Talking to the rep resulted in some new ideas but nothing worked. They then thought of using a weight that has been attached on the 1997 VR6 golf. It is a weight that sits on the caliper(i think) which helps it release. I have been driving for about 6 months now with this new weight and it seems to be working.

The weight is a balance weight for the bottom of the caliper. It bolts onto the caliper carrier. Part Number 1HO698998C. It can be found on the Golf GTI 2 litre and VR6, and the Jetta VR6 and GT.
